Hi

i'm experimenting with my new midi-gizmo to try to do something that came up while we were discussing possibillities yesterday

what we want to do (this goes for me and Stefan) is to be able to zoom in and pan on an input that's shot to wide, giving us a virtual ptz camera (if shot at eg 1080 with a 720 output resolution this can be done without 'cost' .

what i did is set up some sliders to control and zoom on an input, then use that input as a pip (in my case). with the zooming input as overlay1.

problem is that when i slide for zoom, the overlay grows and shrinks with the zoom, instead of staying designed size and cropping everything that doesn't fit.

maybe my explanation isn't really clear, just let me know if i need to try harder :)

I tried zooming on an Input using my Korg nanoKontrol2. Got an arithmetic errer, whose error message didn't show up until I pressed the coq for the Input. Looks like a bug to me. Using the same fader to control for example the Master volume works just fine.

M@ik,

I have been doing the very same thing, and would like the PiP to remain the same size.
Then again, it would be great to be able to adjust the size and position of the PiP via a controller or keyboard shortcuts.

@ doyousee.me

If I understand you correctly M@ik and Stefan (which to me sounds like the zoom function is behaving exactly as it was designed), you want to 'move' and 'zoom' within the PiP frame.
To do this, I think you will have to use a mask, that is create a PiP template with a keyable 'screen' for the PiP input, kind of like a window, that way, whatever zoom or pan you apply to the input will only be seen in the 'window'.

@ AlanZ

Adjusting the size and position should already be possible with shortcuts (with pre-set values, mind you) although, I agree it would be a lot more handy to be able to use a joy stick or even click and drag with a mouse.

Ice, maybe I have missed something. How does one set the overlay position or size using shortcuts? Thanks.

sorry for the delayed response, i don't get notifications from the forum for some reason

i don't think it's by design that if i zoom input1 , and input1 is used as a pip, that the pip size should increase or decrease. if i make input1 fullscreen it just crops, but in the pip it resizes.

imho i design the pip in multiview, not the pip in relation to the orig size of the content.

i even wonder whether this worked the same in older versions, because i did use this kind of zooming and panning (albeit by hand) and can't remember having to adjust my multiscreens later.

@ doyousee.me

It seems to me that vMix has always "zoomed" inputs that way. It might appear counter intuitive at first because we are looking at the 'input' screen and figure everything outside of that should be 'cropped', however, vMix is always working with the entire image, once you realize this, it's easier to "plan" or prepare accordingly.
The best illustration to this understanding is to use a blank (color) input, and use the 'MultiView' feature and place an input behind one of the 'MutiView' XAML templates, as you play with the various 'Zoom' settings of either the 'Input' or the 'Position' in MultiView settings, you will hopefully get a better appreciation for what's actually going on.

@ AlanZ

There are no "Shortcuts" to adjust the actual Overlay channel settings (maybe a feature request is needed) but you can create pre-sets for inputs that will accomplish the PiP effect you want.
Setting the 'Size' and 'Position' of an input requires 3 shortcut keys (for each position and/or size).
One for "SetZoom"
One for "SetPanX"
One for "SetPanY"
In your case, with limited inputs, I would choose "Preview" as the 'Input', that way you can change any of your inputs by 'Previewing' them first.
Example:
For upper left PiP, in "Shortcuts" settings of chosen keys
set value for "SetZoom" to 0.333
set value for "SetPanX" to -0.666
set value for "SetPanY" to 0.555
For single key press operation, on choice of 'Go to' key (say Zoom key) go to advanced settings and add the other 2 keys.

Any of the 'Overlay' channels can now be used to place that 'Input' as an upper left screen PiP.

You will also need 3 keys to reset everything to normal since the "Preview" is not actually an 'Input' but a defacto selection tool, you are physically changing the appearance of the actual "Input" in the preview window (or you could 'reset' manually with each input's cog wheel under 'Position' / 'Main', but that is not as convenient)
So 3 keys for each preset (including Normal) is required, unless you can edit the settings in 'Shortcuts' on the fly (I don't recommend this other than in emergencies, but it is possible).

hmm ok

this question raised in our talk with martin in Amsterdam. I hope he finds some time to make our option work too (I can work around it, I know, but rather wouldn't)
