I realize there are references to vMix and ATEM in several locations. I would like to to have current discussion here.
I have a couple of projects between now and next hockey season tht I would like to resovle;
1. A technique for inbstant replay employing the ATEM and vMix. a)I was hoping that vMix would recognize the USB input port that the ATEM feeds it output to Media Express by. b) Maybe utilize a Haupagge HD Game Recorder to mark in/out points c) Any technique to have instant replays without having to purchase another more expensive item of software (Currently have vMix HD
2. A technique to monitor the audio out of the ATEM. The USB feed to Media Expess
I am running both vMix (as a feed to the ATEM) and Media Express via the USB port to capture the ATEM output) on the same laptop.
Anyone with any suggestions or am I chasing something that will never happen
Thanks
Whit

@ calamityjane
I certainly see the advantages vMix brings to the ATEM workflow as an input. However, I have a lot of trouble understanding what advantages, if any, that the ATEM brings to the vMix workflow... In other words, I think vMix adds to the ATEM's functionality as a source for videos and as character generator and such, but loses a lot of it's own versatility, usefulness and power when used in that capacity. Using the ATEM as a source for vMix makes more sense to me if you want to take advantage of all of vMix's powers, however, it limits the 'access' to your camera inputs to a single input, unless you can split split the signal and capture it again as an input in vMix, which kind of begs the question "what do I need the ATEM for then?"
What is your current workflow and (if you don't mind my asking) what led you to take that path? It's not a criticism as I have often thought of acquiring an ATEM (I've been attracted by their hardware Broadcast Panels for several years now) but every time I look into it deeper I quickly come to the realization that the BMD line of products are designed to work more with themselves than as a "Mix & Match" component solution that adheres to industry standards and/or compatibility and so I back off. Perhaps your experience and reasoning will shed some light on things for me.

What is your current workflow and (if you don't mind my asking) what led you to take that path? Ice My workflow has evolved over the past 4 months. It has been tempered by some outside influences (donations & borrowing). My original plan was to emulate this arrangement; But then I discovered vMix and thought I would substitute a HP zBook with a few USB ports and 1 Thunderbolt portMy financials at the time ruled this out, I did purchase vMix but not the laptop. Then the Streaming fairy arrived in the form of a local station who would lend me for my hockey broadcasts one of their enhanced ATEM TVS setups which they call a Studio In A Box. Now that was a nice arrangement but I thought ( coming from a Trcaster Studio background) I needed a laptop for caprturing and playing interviews etc, as a feed into the ATEM. My Tricaster heritage called this the DDR. So I borrowed a laptop but it wouldn't play the HD videos fluidly enough to stream after being mixed in the ATEM. So after some good advice n this forum, I purchase an MSI GT72 laptop, i7 processor with turbo potential, 16 GB RAM and an Invidia 970M grpahics card with 6GB RAM. As well it had 6 USB 3.0 ports. My DDR. At that point my benefactor did not want me to alter any whatsover settings on thir ATEM not their controlling laptop. So had another partner purchase an ATEM TVS for me. On the road to success. But now I was running out of supporting laptops, needed a Windows 7 , 64 bit machine. My two were only 32 bit. So I purchased Strata Pro for my iPad to control the switching. Of course now this necessitated employing an old router so I could connect wirelessly to the ATEM with the iPad. Sorry you asked yet ? But that is where I currently stand; 3 cameras ( 2 with SDI cable and 1 with HDMI), my laptop (HDMI) and my webcam as inputs to my laptop. But no method to easily monitor audio out
No method for doing Instant Replays

Long expensive story short, My setup was first vmix sd worked great but of course hd was the next step, allot of trouble and money (2years, 2k,loosing costumers)later i was done with the perpetual changing software, useless updates that go about the shadow of the knobs make me tired but for business you must make a bit money and invest, now I've jumped to the atem tvs build everything in one handy case two recorders stand alone without the need of pc or laptop, thats my basic no need to read constantly every change in software, that leads to not working parts. Personal opinion, Vmix is great to stream the output after everything has been recorded, years ago i suggest on this forum to make a knob that when nothing else works and you NEED to go LIVE hit the emergency switch, and go to the basics only dissolve or cut, audio record separate and for sake a flashing record button that really works, mine did not record anything while flashing. Maybe vmix is now better i hope, and think it is, i speak from experience and go another way, vmix after atem. RVtv Video Produkties Www.rvtvvideoprodukties.nl

I also use the BlackMagic ATEM as a front end to my production system. Part of the reasoning RVtv Video used were in play, but the chief benefit to me was the ability to combine the switching of video only through the BM ATEM (we have a unit - no longer sold - that handles 4 HDMI inputs and 4 SDI inputs) with vMix used for back end processing of scoreboard overlays and graphic overlays for sports production at the small college (Upstate SC USA) where I work.
But the biggest advantage I have found is the ability to put together a computer system + video card (lowest level Decklink plus Alienware small form factor desktop) that cost less than $1400 at the time of purchase. We still mostly use the system as a one or two camera operation as the biggest barrier to going to more video inputs is personnel to run the cameras. We have a small old laptop we use to run the switching on the ATEM when running multiple cameras while still using the main computer to process the graphics.
