Another important point that came up after a customer visit yesterday. In an instant replay system it should be possible to play backwards. This is impossible at the moment, we tried different things like "SetRate = -1" but could not get it to work. A "PlayBack" shortcut should also be defined and to complete the functionality "PlayBackSpeed" will show slow-motion backwards. With external controllers later on it will be fun to browse back and forth through the recorded material by turning the jog wheel. In sports productions of all kind this will be a nice additional feature.

Karsten

+1 on Play backwards

That would be "the" occasion I would want the camera views in sync and be able to cycle through each view forwards and backwards on a controversial call...

The other 95% of the time, though, I would prefer each view to be "independent" and start at the "in" point whenever that view is selected.

As Karsten mentioned, a comprehensive list of shortcuts would help a lot. Especially in a single operator mode.

It would be very nice to be able to create a shortcut list of commands that would allow a single operator, based on a single click, to:
-create an instant replay based on a mark out (-10 sec) for all camera angles
-to instantly output these 10 sec clips at normal speed and/or slow motion speed (preconfigured speed)
-to automatically save these clips on an SSD for later viewing
-to output the live preview again

The possibility to customize and automatize the whole process of creating, viewing and saving the instant replay from several camera views would be great! It would help a lot the single operators that are not professional operators.

Thank you Martin for presenting your work so far and listening to customers feedback!

Emil.

Hi Guys,

I am currently working on performance targets for Instant Replay and would be curious about the following:

* What is the minimum number of cameras you need for instant replay?
* What CPU do you currently use and are you planning on upgrading in the near future?
* What resolution are the cameras typically set to? 1080i or 720p?

Thanks,

Martin

* minimum? 1 :)
* i7 4790K. No plans to upgrade
* I always do 720p project and if my camera can output 720p - I set it so. If not - my magewell resizes the 1080 output to 720

Hi,
My minimum for replays is 4 cameras (with sync) but would prefer 6 if possible.
I am building a new rig specifically to handle six to 8 inputs (two quad cards) based on ASUS X99-E WS with i7-5930K processor and SSD drives in Raid 0. This machine will primarily be for sport events with replays.
I do everything at 1080i 59.94 or 29.97

Needs and wants are sometimes different things!
In a perfect world, it would be nice to have every camera input available for instant replay, but that may not be practical.
As it stands now, I often just use 1 camera for replay, and it works well, but to answer your question as to what the minimum should be for this "new" instant replay, I would say the bare minimum is 2 HD cameras @ 720p but would target reliable performance for 3 HD cameras @ 1080p as the "standard" for such a system if that is possible.
Of course, all this coming from a guy who is still using SD cameras...
But I do have plans and desires to upgrade down the road, some of which depends on what capabilities exist and at what price point.

my Current config is:

3 SD cameras
i7 950

* We use 6 cameras in our hockey production: 1x wide shot, 1x zoom, 2x behind the goals and 2x above the goals. It would be great to use all 6 inputs for replays on one machine.
* we have to PCs with a i7 4930K
* currently we rather use 720p, because fast motion looks very bad with blend deinterlacing on the current video delay system, but the broadcast/recording standard should be 1080i. 3 of the 6 cameras we use are not ours and we only get 1080i from those cameras. the new system needs to have bob (or something similar) deinterlaing on all replay inputs.

currently newtek has two versions of their "3play" replay system. one with 4 inputs and one with 8 inputs (1080i), I think it would be really impressive and a good selling point if vmix would be able to support up to 6x 1080i input. I think that this is kind of a sweetspot for a well produced sports prodcution.

Thanks Martin, I really appreciate your work ethic and that you listen to your customers.

Current system is an i7-3930k with 16GB and 3 SSDs with 4 SDI inputs and 4 SD inputs. Hoping to step up to HD productions this year at 720p.

Also testing a new (to me) Dell Precision T7500 with dual xeon 6-core processors and 24GB and 3 SSDs. Hopefully it has the throughput to use the multicorder on 3 or 4 720p inputs at once.

In our productions (and most productions of our customers) we have following situation:
- minimum number of cameras for instant replay: 2
- wanted number of cameras for instant replay: at least 4 (better 6)
- CPU used at the moment: at least i7 4790 or XEON E5 1620 (workstation), this will also be minimum level in the future
- typical resolution: depends on demand of the sports league, in most cases 1080i (even though 720p would be better sometimes)

Thanks for the info.

4 cameras is the maximum the replay will support for now.

Testing has revealed the following minimum specs:

4 Camera 1080i59.94

Latest 6 core i7 processor 3.6Ghz or higher
NVIDIA 760 GTX or higher

4 Camera 1080p, 720p

4 Core 3.9Ghz or higher
NVIDIA 760 GTX or higher

2 Camera 1080i, 1080p, 720p

4 Core 3.6Ghz or higher
NVIDIA 750 Ti or higher

One change that has been made since the preview screenshot, is the removal of the Quad camera playback preview for performance reasons.
Instead two simultaneous camera angles can be displayed and you can pick any of the four angles to show on each.

Regards,

Martin

Any minimum specs with regards to RAM and/or Hard Drives (SSD's were recommended earlier)?

8GB ram minimum. SSD a must for more than one camera.

Would you say a USB 3.0 external SSD could do it? Or is it hampered by CPU overhead by USB protocol?
I guess thunderbolt SSD would work fine.

Can you please explain the preview part a little bit more?

Do I understand it correctly that it will not be possible to preview all 4 replay channels at the same time?

And will it only be possible to preview the channels in the "Program Preview" window? Is there no classic small input module like in the normal Vmix interface?

You can preview the live cameras just as you would right now.
But as far as playback of replay footage goes, there will be two inputs Replay A and Replay B
and you can select a single camera angle for each, with toggle buttons to change them on the fly.

But a maximum of two replay angles can be viewed simultaneously at any time.
This is mainly for performance reasons.

Would there be any functional differences (# of Camera simultaneous views or possible inputs)if using SD inputs?

Will it be possible to automatically play one camera angle after another from the same situation? Something like, marking the good camera angles (maybe 2 out 4 angles) and play them automatically from desired in and out points with a specific speed?

Or would I have to create a highlight clip of every camera angle and add them manually to the playlist?

That would be a great feature if possible.

I'm envisioning this being run by a separate operator as they do with network productions. Any plans to offer the feature through the web function?
