I wanted to tap the many creative minds here :) Anyone have an idea on how to create a virtual first down line for football in vMix? I am hoping there is an "think out of the box" method that may work.

Yep, I have read that. That is why I was hoping there was a creative, "thinking out of the box" way to accomplish it :)

I listened to an electronics podcast a while ago where they talked to a guy who worked on one of the commercial systems for doing this and based on what he said I think the wikipedia article only begins to hint at the complexity of these systems.

You need to know the exact position, angle and field of view(zoom, iris etc.) of all the cameras at all times and then feed that into some complex algorithms to calculate the position of the virtual line in 3D space.

Once you know that you then need some very advanced chroma-key filters to overlay the line over the video. (not easy to do, just imagine there is sun over half the ground and some of the players are wearing colors close to that of the grass.)

Assuming all the cameras you want to use for this effect are stationary and you don't mind if the line is just, say a 40% alpha overlay (not keyed), then this may be do-able for someone with experience in video, 3d projection math and programming to put together a rough prototype in a couple of months.

Sorry to burst your bubble but this is a complex problem.

Timothy.

It seems very clear that I should focus on obtainable things :) We will fine tune the instant replay and my next goal is to incorporate a telestrator for our commentators.

Thanks for the followup post!

Hogwam,
I bought this one for Telestrating ($15). Great solution and very inexpensive. Will be fine for highschool sports.

Will leave first down lines to the College and pro guys :)
