Hi everyone,

I'm running a conference setup with vMix and I need live subtitles/captions for the speakers. Organizer wants real-time text on screen.

Has anyone found a good solution that works with vMix for live events? Any recommendations would be appreciated.

Thanks!

Hi there! πŸ‘‹

There are many services available online. Here's one of them that's free:

I used https://startsync.app/live-translation and it was ok, including the audio part which I was able to route through buses.
I just added the translation URL as a browser source in vMix with transparent background and layered it on top of the program

What's cool is that besides the live translation subscription they also have other automation features included in the plan: presentation management, timers, speaker displays, agenda screens, all synced. So you're not just paying for translation. And for the translation minutes you can buy however many you need, you're not locked into a fixed package.

vimeo, video.taxi and others have it build in in their services. Advantage is that it is not burned into the video. It's done player side.

For conference streams I run the rough speech-to-text transcript through a second machine and bring it in as a browser overlay, then a volunteer fixes names and acronyms in a shared doc during breaks. Live captions are honestly fine for general speech, but they always butcher proper nouns, so I set the font large and keep the lines short to make the errors less distracting. After the show I clean up the recording transcript properly. It is not perfect, but for a small crew it beats typing captions by hand.

Adding to my note above: for the rough transcript I use SpeechText, which turns the speaker audio into a workable draft that I tidy up before it hits the browser overlay. For conference panels it has saved me a lot of manual typing.

Hi everyone,

I’m currently working on a solution for this exact use case with vMix. It started as a live captioning tool, but the project is evolving: the goal is now to go beyond captions and offer real-time translation, including voice-to-voice, so the audience could hear the speaker in their own language through a dedicated audio output in vMix.

It’s still in development, but if you’d like to be kept informed or take part in early testing, you can leave your email here: https://xcarpentier.github.io/caption-live/

I’d also be glad to hear about your specific needs (language pairs, captions vs. translated audio, acceptable latency), as it will help me shape the next steps.
