4K webcam - controls and switching - usb c - Cameras dropping out

Hey all,

I run a decent rig and seem to be dropping 4K webcams,

They are running on usb c and have died additional usb c cards with 10gbps,

I have run the Elgato 4K cameras to 10gbps hubs and then back to the pc as they cables done seem to adapt well to volt drop,

I guess my question is are there any decent usb c video mixers/ power units / connectors/ hubs that you could suggest,

I have 2 x Elgato 4k60 on usb c and one insta360 running more stable from usb a and an other usb A 2k webcam and a Q2n-4K
The 2 Elgato are a pain in my ass

Something isn’t right and would like some ideas of how I can get it better however I might take the 4K Elgato out and see how this improves and add the 2 x insta 360s in there.

Any knowledge you can share would be appreciated for these situations.

Hi,

What motherboard/CPU do you have?
What is the resolution of the vMix project and the webcams?
Elgato 4K cameras = facecam ?

In most cases, you should avoid USB hubs,
because certain motherboard USB ports often already share same USB bandwidth.

To avoid voltage drop, you need USB hubs with an external 5V 3A power supply and a VIA VL822 chip,
such as the Delock 64293.

For PCIe cards with USB ports, each USB port needs to have its own controller, like StarTech cards:

PEXUSB3S44V: 4 independent 5 Gbps USB ports on a PCIe 2.0 x4 card with 4 Renesas/NEC µPD720202 controllers (1 per USB port)

or

P10Q4C-USB-CARD (or P10Q4A-USB-CARD): 4 independent 10 Gbps USB ports on a PCIe 3.0 x4 card with 4 ASMedia ASM3142 controllers (1 per USB port)
and ideally, the PCIe card should be connected to the CPU's PCIe lanes.

It is preferable for these PCIe USB cards to be installed in a PCIe slot connected to the CPU lanes.

For a full-USB configuration, an AMD platform is preferable because some of the motherboard's USB ports are connected directly to the CPU.

An example of an optimal USB configuration for an Asus ROG Strix B450-F Gaming motherboard with a Ryzen CPU:

This allows for either seven 5 Gbps USB ports
or four 10 Gbps USB ports plus three 5 Gbps USB ports,
with each USB port having its own dedicated bandwidth.

It may also be necessary to provide power to the PCIe/USB card if you connect USB hubs or cameras that require a lot of power.
