There is one thing in vMix that has been bothering me for a while:

I often like to use vmix as a playout system for both lower thirds and full screen videos to a videomixer via cut&Fill over a decklink card.

There is one thing that doesn't work and I don't know if it is a bug or not possible and maybe it could be fixed with V29

  1. Add a transparent colour as an input.
  2. Put that input into program
  3. quickplay or take a full screen video
  4. try to fade the transparent colour into the pgm again. There is no fading transition to the transparent colour but just an ugly cut.

the only solution maybe to use the overlays to playout videos because then it works, but thats by far more complicated because you need to activate audio seperately with companion.

Look here for discussion and feature request:

https://forums.vmix.com/...--as-a-transition-option

If I understand you correctly, for your use case I would suggest to deactivate "Automatically Mix Audio" for the video input, and just leave audio on all the time.

Thank you for your answer, dmwkr, but it's not a feature discussion but the question, if this maybe a bug.

As you can see, there is a specific "colour" called "transparent" to use as a basic input that seems to be intended for my usecase. This colour should behave like any other colour if you use it fullscreen in the output as long as you are using outputs destinations that are capable of alpha colours. This is the case with NDI (and maybe also the new OMT) and output cards like BMD Decklink.

So if I fade in from an image to the transparent color, the transparency should fade out the picture and slowly fade in the transparent colour and vice versa when fading back to the image (or similar content).

I would guess that is a bug and not a feature addon.

You can test this behaviour even without a decklink card in your system. Just use the NDI studio monitor of the NDI tools, activate straight alpha output and NDI output on Output in 1 vmix and activate "show checkerboard" in the studio monitor to view the transparency.

The Fade in to the content will work great, the fade out back to the full screen "transparent colour input" will just cut at the end of the transition time.

I think this has been asked (on different use cases) several times in the forums, and this is one discussion on the topic, that I still had in mind. So, I don't think it is a bug, it is the way fade works in vMix and Martin described it. There are workarounds described and in the end, it is a feature request. Your case is slightly different, but - as I see it - a symptom of the same, not a bug.

Here is another one, maybe more to the point: https://forums.vmix.com/...ansparent-fade#post90720

I don't understand the issue you're experiencing (or how it relates to v29 as the stickied post clearly says feature requests should be in the feature requests forum). If you use a fade transition (or use the t-bar), it takes what is in preview, overlays it on top of program at opacity 0, an increases opacity from 0 to 1, and when at 1 that input becomes the new program and what was the previous input is cut to preview.

So what you're doing is you have something in Program, when you start the fade you're putting an already transparent input on top of it, increasing the opacity until the end of the transition (but since it's a transparent input there's nothing to see even at opacity 1) and at the end of the transition cutting the program input to preview leaving just the transparent input.

If you're expecting what was in program to become progressively more transparent over the duration of the fade, that's not how you go about it.
