Dear vMix users,
I’ve been struggling to manage my audio levels using the GOXLR audio board—especially when trying to prevent clipping and distortion. Despite my efforts to ride the faders manually, the fluctuations are just too unpredictable to keep up with.
A friend recommended using an audio limiter, but after watching numerous videos and even speaking with the team at Waves.com, I’m still unsure about what would be the simplest and most effective solution to integrate with vMix.
My setup involves mixing pre-recorded video with live audio from virtual reality social platforms, where volume levels can swing wildly. I’d really appreciate any recommendations on an easy-to-implement audio limiter or best practices to smooth out the audio in vMix.
Thank you in advance for your help.
Warm regards, Carlos in Texas

Hi doggy, I was able to install the plug in. Thank you. Question, in vmix the levels are still hitting in the red, but I have selected YouTube in master_me. I am in easy mode. Thoughts, Here is a video recorded off my display with my iphone and uploaded to google drive to help you see what I am talking about. https://drive.google.com...5WYK_QU/view?usp=sharingMerci, Carlos

Hi. At first personally im using this plugin only 1 time in the master output and not per input. Im using vmix for playout 24/7. I see in your setup that plugin work. If still you get "Red" levels you have to the plugin target (lufs) to lower this more. In my workflow i have it about -21 and the volume level is almost same to the big tv stations in Greece but also this depends on our videos/live we have. Be aware that if the audio comes in loud and distorted, then the limiter can’t do much about it. It will be lowered but still distorted

Thank you Nikos....I will do testing to figure out how to make it better. One weird thing that happened today was I got some very loud buzz in the audio bus, but I restarted vmix and it went away. Will try again tomorrow. Hi to Athens. Thank you. carlos

You video shows the plugin adding about 10db of gain, but looking at the pre/post meters in the audio input there's at least 20db of gain being applied. I'd check the general tab in the audio settings for that input and ensure you don't have additional gain there. I'd have that set to 0db gain if you have plugins working.

I'm reaching out to see if you could take a moment to review a video I made that walks through my current setup. I’d really appreciate your insight on how I can adjust things to make the most of the plugin. Here’s the video: https://drive.google.com...r2THCX5/view?usp=sharingThanks in advance for your time and support! If you're unfamiliar with what all the settings do in the various audio processes included in that plugin, and if what you primarily want is a limiter, I would turn off everything else (the EQ, Knee Compressor, Multiband Compressor and Leveler) and start by just using the Limiter and Brickwall (limiter). If you then start experimenting with the various settings within those two modules, or even just use one at a time, at least you won't be influenced by what those other modules are doing, because the way it is in your video there's a lot of different audio processing going on.
My general advice on Limiters is that they're great and I wouldn't want to be without one whenever possible, but they work best when they're doing the least amount of work, which is down to you riding the levels as best you can and just using the limiter as a safety net rather than some sort of automatic volume control. Ideally you shouldn't hear a limiter working.

I just took a closer look at the software and noticed the toggles that allow everything to be turned off except the Limiter and Brickwall—just as you mentioned. Great call! It looks like the levels are finally staying out of the red zone. YAY! Hopefully, this proves to be a solid and reliable solution to prevent the master output from clipping—something that’s been a persistent issue for quite some time. Many thanks, ZenVideo!
