In Settings/Output, you can choose the source for each of the 4 outputs. Problem is if you reorder the inputs (drag and Drop), or delete a lower input, then the Output will now use the incorrect source. For Instance, I have output 2 pointing to Input44. Now if I delete input #5, Output 2 still pointing to Input44, but this is now the incorrect input as they have been ordered from the previous delete. This is a silent failure, with a broken output. I Would expect that vMix would see that a reorder/delete of inputs would break Outputs, and automatically fixup the input # for each output. 2024-12-17_22-17-53.jpg (106kb) downloaded 0 time(s).

I've been caught out by this a few times!
+1
My "workaround" to date has been to put my ident as input 1, Mix 2 as Input 2 (and assigned to Output 2), and Mix 3 as Input 3 (assigned to Output 3)... and ALWAYS keep those input numbers assigned to output and change what's on the mix.

This would break way more than it fixes. I keep my outputs 2-4 at Inputs 1-3. If I move something to/from Inputs 1-3, it's because I want it to be moved to Output 2-4. I don't want, nor can I see a valid reason for, vMix to assume I didn't do that on purpose and follow whatever input was initially there.

A good thing in the new Vmix 28 is that the API has the info on what is on the outputs. So we can watch them via a script or companion bitfocus and if this value changes to be able to inform in a streamdeck button that for example the output 2 is on input named hello,so you know that if previous was goodbye, you have to change it.

+1 I've noticed this as a usability problem as soon as I started using vMix recently.

What I would like to see is for the current functionality to remain unchanged (as it would be a breaking change), as essentially what's happening is you're not referencing a specific Input to be used as the output, but rather an Input Number, so just like any other situation where you make a request using Input Number it will always use whatever input happens to be at the number in the order.
As an addition though, there should be an option to reference inputs in the output selection by Name, or Key, much in the same way that when using the API if you use an Inputs Name, or Key, it'll use that specific input regardless of Input order. This way it'd be a non-breaking change, and would simply be an addition so that those who wish to use it this way can, and those who wish to continue to reference by input number wont need to change a thing.
