I have an idea: could a timer be displayed when using an overlay to show how much time is remaining if it's an animation or video file?

For example, I have a transparent background with a video file that includes audio. I’d like to see how much time is left for the video to finish playing, without having to use the preview window. I hope that makes sense. Essentially, when an overlay is selected, a timer would appear to indicate how long it has left before ending.

+1
Until then, you can build your own solution either by scripting or bitfocus companion

Neither me. To learn the whole scripting procedure seems to me like a mountain higher than everest and im at 0 meters. Although i like to try things from here and there and many times i get the desired (or close to what i need to do) by trial and error things.
For the thing you say,i do this through bitfocus companion vmix module as i find it more easy than scripting.
There also exist a 3rd party app that does this thing https://forums.vmix.com/...on-Back-Timing-Reference
You can see the remaining data or in the external app or send it, inside vmix to a title file for the selected input or for a video that is active or preview. For any video input you do overlay,a way to do it,is to send the overlay videos in a mix input-->pgm or preview and then read the remaining time of this and write it to a title or your streamdeck/companion device button
