I'm doing research for a custom dual VMIX pc setup.

Right now I'm mainly following the VMIX reference page (diamond setup).

I have this in my mind, but I'm having some doubts about the maximum PCI lanes:

Motherboard: ASUS Z790-P WIFI - This one has 5 PCI slots (1x 5.0 X16 + 3x 4.0 X16 + 1x 3.0 X1). But it can only handle X16 + X4 lanes or X8 + X8 + X4 lanes. So 20 lanes max.

The CPU: Intel I9 12900KF

This CPU is limited to 20 lanes max as well.
The GPU: Gigabyte GeForce RTX 4080

My first idea was to use the BMD Decklink Quad (4x HDMI in, uses X8 lanes) together with the BMD Decklink 8K Pro (4x 12G SDI, also uses X8 lanes).
The GPU ideally uses an X16 config, but I read that the difference between X16 and X8 is so little that it's almost unnoticeable.

But even when the GPU is in an X8 config, I still need another X16 lanes for the capture cards. Which gives me a total of X24 lanes.

I found an alternative for the BMD Decklink Quad, the Elgato Cam Link Pro (also 4x HDMI in) that only needs X4 lanes. Which brings the total to X20 lanes.

Does anybody has experience with reaching the maximum amount of PCI lanes? What are your setups with double capture cards?

@ TuurT

Please review the specifications of your MB, the 3rd may be a x4 slot integrated in the Chipset and not the CPU.
The latest video from Tim at vMix explains some of that:

if you see the manual of mb it says
Intel® 13 th & 12 th Gen Processors*
1 x PCIe 5.0 x16 slot
Intel® Z790 Chipset
3 x PCIe 4.0 x16 slots (support x4 mode)
1 x PCIe 3.0 x1 slot
so there is not a 2nd pcie slot at x8

My experience to this is that may it will work but if push the system on it`s limits, boom!! I have a pc setup i7 10th gen cpu in an asrock b460. This m/b support in 1st pcie 3.0 16x, in 2nd pcie slot only 2x and it also has 2 pci-e 1x. I have a 1050ti in 1st 16x slot, a bmd intensity pro 4k (bmd says that needs 4x lanes) in 2nd slot and in the other 2 pcie 1x slots i have 2 bmd mini recorder card. At first i setup my windows in a nvme disk and if the system was too pressed in vmix i had windows blue screen!! I changed nvme with a sata ssd disk and no more blue screen.. But intensity 4x card some times it freezes. I need to close camera, open it again and then works ok again for a certain time. I tried this card in another m/b asrock h570 that 2nd pci-e 16x slot is 4x and has not any freeze.
so my opinion is that for double card that work 8x lanes you need other cpu and m/b

Yeah, it's because of this video that I learned more about the PCI lanes.

But it says 3 times X16 slot? So X8 should work fine as well, no?

Do you have a motherboard and CPU in mind?

Thanks!

How many HDMI inputs total is required?

I am in a similar position and looking for a multi capture card setup.

Take a look at the MSI X670E Ace (AMD)

https://www.msi.com/Motherboard/MEG-X670E-ACE

3x PCI-E x16 slot
Supports x16/x0/x4, x8/x8/x4
PCI_E1 Gen PCIe 5.0 supports up to x16 (From CPU)
PCI_E2 Gen PCIe 5.0 supports up to x8 (From CPU)
PCI_E3 Gen PCIe 5.0 supports up to x4 (From CPU)

So you would be running:

4080 x8
Quad HDMI x8
Another card x4

Most importantly all 3 slots are direct from CPU and not the chipset. Note the equivalent Intel Z790 does not get this configuration:

https://www.msi.com/Moth...G-Z790-ACE/Specification

3x PCI-E x16 slot
PCI_E1 Gen PCIe 5.0 supports up to x16 (From CPU)
PCI_E2 Gen PCIe 5.0 supports up to x8 (From CPU)
PCI_E3 Gen PCIe 4.0 supports up to x4 (From Chipset)

I don't know your resolution requirements but I am looking for 4k60 and for the 3rd slot I can only find the Elgato 4K60 Pro MK.2 at the moment which gives me a total of 5 4k60 inputs.

Hope this helps.

Thanks, looks interesting.
I just to max out the system, so as many I/O's (SDI and HDMI) as possible in a mid priced build.
