What does the Automatic Gain Control checkbox in audio settings do, and (when) is it appropriate to set it on the Master?

We run our sunday services through vmix. Every week people complain about volume. We adjust it for the pulpit speaker, but then maybe the piano ( on a separate input ) is too low. If the piano is good, then maybe the vocalist (on yet another input) is to low. We can't really tell how the stream sound because we're right there in the room hearing room sound. I'm wondering if Automatic Gain Control will help?

I'm also looking at other possibilities like installing and paying attention to a LUFS meter vst plugin, which might help visualize sound levels better. Or possibly investing in noise canceling headphones, so we don't hear the room (as much) when mixing VMIX levels.

It is a challenge. We are using the Youlean VST plugin for LUFS loudness meter, but you still need to live monitor and ride the fader. Noise cancelling headphones are a good idea.

I think it's hilarious that we're both talking about the same problem within hours of each other. Check for a DM from me.

hi,

Automatic gain controll is wonderfull, i have it enabled all the time... BUT its not a magic solution, your mix needs to be balanced enough to reach best results.

Have you tried the MasterMe VST Plugin?
https://github.com/trummerschlunk/master_me
It's an automatic audio mastering plugin for live-streaming, podcasting and internet radio stations.

Talked to the developer a couple of weeks ago and it sounded pretty exciting. Didn't have a chance to give it a try myself, though.
