Hello Folks,

my CDN-Operator asked me to send my streams with HLS or HTTP-Streaming from now on. In his opinion there a lot of Advantages to rtmp.

I was searching through the Internet and i saw that HLS is from 2009 developed by apple.

Is there a reason why RTMP is still the most used protocol for livestreaming?

Any Program you now which is supporting HLS?

Thank you guys!

Best regards

HLS has a lot of latency built into the chunking, rtmp is flash based which use to mean a lot of compatibility but now flash is quickly disappearing.

HLS is easier to get through some firewalls because its on port 80- rtmp uses 1935. But rtmp is on its way out. HLS has a lot of advantages when it comes to adaptive bitrates. But if you are sending a feed to a CDN a lot of these advantages are irrelevant, hence the stubborn popularity of RTMP for the actual sending of the stream to publisher.

If I was a betting man, I think in 5 years we will be using SRT to contribute feeds and maybe even watch them.

Dear all,

Our CDN Akamai does not support rtmp ingest under MSL 4 anymore.
MSL 4 requires that the ingest stream is provided as HLS.

We need HLS streaming out of vMix. +1
