Hello,

I am in the process of building myself a mATX computer to travel with me as I do video streaming gig and there are two amd cpu i'm interested in, the 5 5600 and the 5 5600G. They are very similar cpu but each have their own advantage.

First option is the AMD 5 5600G, it is the recommended one in the OPAL reference system (https://www.vmix.com/products/vmix-reference-systems.aspx#opal).
It has an iGPU but it use pcie 3.0 instead of pcie 4.0. I heard it prevent the computer from using 100% capabilitie of the NVME drive.

Second option is the AMD 5 5600, wich is a bit more powerfull than the 5600G, it use pcie 4.0 but it has no IGPU.

So i guess the core of my question is really, does the IGPU of the Amd 5 5600G provide an advantage for VMIX ? Because if not, i might get AMD 5 5600 (no G). If vmix do use the IGPU of the amd 5 5600G, i will get the 5600G instead.

FYI, Im thinking of using my old gtx 1060 as a GPU or getting something more recent/powerfull as the main gpu and a decklink duo. The mobo is MSI PRO B550M-VC.

What would be your opinion on the matter ?

You probably won't actually notice much difference between CPUs, but the Ryzen 5600G is slightly faster and runs cooler, which is probably more beneficial to vMix.
Since you will be using a GTX 1060, the integrated graphics is inconsequential, however, you may want to rethink your choice of MB as MSI PRO B550M-VC only supports one slot at x16 and three at x1, so the Decklink Duo 2 is not likely to perform well for you as it requires a x4 slot.

May i ask something if you know please. RTX 3060 how much better is compared to GTX1060? In terms of supporting encodes into vmix. With 1060 i can do 3 1080 H264 encodes (multicorder 2 cameras and 1 output) even with the driver that says it support 8 encodes. 3060 is able to do more than 3 H264 encodes?

The GTX 1060 has 1280 CUDA Cores @ 1506 MHz and is very good for average use with vMix.
The RTX 3060 has 3584 CUDA Cores @ 1320 MHz and so slightly slower but excellent for general use with vMix.
The RTX 4090 has 16384 CUDA Cores @ 2235 MHz and is currently the best card you can get for use with vMix.
All cards can do up to 8x NVENC h264 encodes, although, you will likely see the older cards start to slow down with 5 or more such encodes.

Thank you for your answer. that`s why im asking. The GTX series (i didnt try the 1080 but 1050ti/1060 3gb and 6gb version/1070ti) if i do 4 encodes (3 cameras and 1 output) and same time i do virtualset (2 or 3 angles of the set, with 1 virtualset is ok but to the limits of the render time) i see the render time goes up (gpu mem is ok as number and 3060 has also the resizeable bar but dont know if it helps to the encode process) and the message GPU overload is coming up.
So i assume from your answer that also with 3060 my workflow will not avoid the overload.

Allright then, I am resurecting this topic because I begun to work on that project again !

Im looking to build a small PC wich can run vMix with a BM Decklink Duo 2

So I sold the previous motherboard to my friend since it didnt have enough 4x pci lane.

Here are the component I already have:
Ryzen 7 5800X
GTX 1060 6gb
G.Skill Trident Z Neo (DDR4 3600)
SAMSUNG SSD 990 Pro 2 tb

I am looking at M-Atx motherboard with enough real PCI Lane, and I don't want to make the same mistake twice. All motherboard advertiste the PCI size, not the actual speed, so it's not self evident which is the right pic

What about the Asus Prime B550M-A AC ?

AMD Ryzen™ 5000 G-Series/ 4000 G-Series Desktop Processors,AMD Ryzen™ 5000 Series/ 3000 Series Desktop Processors,AMD B550 Chipset,
2 x PCIe 3.0 x1,1 x PCIe 4.0 x16 (x16 mode),1 x PCIe 3.0 x16 (x16 mode)


Or maybe the MAG B550M MORTAR ?

The first MB you listed only has a single x16 PCI slot, and two x1 slots. So there would be no place to plug in your capture card.

The second MB does have two x16 slots (although the second one is electrically x4, which is fine since x4 is all you need for your capture card). The board has two m.2 slots. However, the second m.2 slot shares the PCI lanes with the second PCI x16 slot. So if you plug in an m.2 SSD into the second m.2 slot, it will disable the second x16 PCI slot. You don't mention having two SSDs, so that should be fine.

Ryzen 7 5800x manages 20 pcie lanes

on all mATX AM4 motherboards, the cpu lanes are distributed between the GPU pcie slot (x16 lanes) and an M2 port (x4 lanes)

and the chipset links for mATX AM4 are pcie 3.0 x4

so either you take a motherboard with 2 M2 ports
and you connect the duo 2 to the M2 port (cpu) via an M2 to pcie x4 adapter
and the samsung 990 pro to the 2nd M2 slot (chipset) which will then be restricted to 3.0 x4

or a motherboard with a pcie x4 slot (chipset) to connect the duo 2, in addition pcie x16 slot (cpu) for the GPU
and you connect the samsung 990 pro to the M2 port (cpu)

MSI MAG B550M MORTAR WIFI allows you to do one or the other
Warning: if an ssd is connected to the 2nd M2 port, pcie slot x4 is disabled

otherwise, so that everything is managed by the 20 cpu lanes, you have to go on ATX and find an AM4 card with 2 pcie ports (cpu) in x8/x8 for GPU/duo 2 + M2 x4 (cpu) for 990 pro like Asus proart B550 creator for example

Thanks a lot, i think I get it.

But now i'm wondering if theres gonna be a bottleneck of somekind: using the mATX B550M Mortar will I utilize the Ryzen 7 5800x and GTX 1060 to the fullest?

If I go full atx with the pro-art B550, the duo 2 will be connected though a 4 CPU PCI LANE instead of 4 Chipset PCI lane, and this is better? Same thing if I get a M2 PCI adapter, it will connect the Decklink duo to the cpu lane and this too is better ?

Reading about the decklink duo, it required PCI Express 4 lane generation 2, so does that mean I can just connect it to the pcie x4 slot (chipset) with no bottleneck or loss of power ?

Vmix recommends to use cpu lanes for gpu and capture card

but many people use chipset lanes without knowing it and it still works, even if it is always better that it is managed by the cpu directly, it avoids the "back and forth" and the "tolls" between chipset and cpu, I extrapolate to illustrate my words
you just have to be careful not to exceed the maximum bandwidth of the chipset

taking into account that the bandwidth of the chipset is shared with other peripherals (lan/wifi, usb ports, sata III ports)
and that some slots/ports can be disabled relative to each other because they share the same bandwidth in the chipset.

you have to consult the motherboard manual.

unlike the micro atx b550, some atx am4 like the Asus proart B550 creator for example, are able to divide the 2 pcie slots managed by the cpu
and allow to have the cpu lanes on more slots (pcie or m2)

Ryzen 7 5800x (= 20 cpu lanes) on Asus proart B550 creator

A + M2_1 = x20 cpu lanes

default configuration:
pcie slot 1 = x16 = gpu
m2_1 = x4 = windows ssd

split configuration:
pcie slot 1 = x8 = gpu
pcie slot 2 = x8 = duo 2
m2_1 = x4 = windows ssd

in configuration 2, we can even install a decklink quad 2 (pcie 2.0 x8) instead of decklink duo 2 to have 8 x sdi inputs/outputs

B + C = B550 chipset = one device used disable another or reduce bandwidth of all

for config, put 2 x16 gb ddr4 to be quiet
see if with the gtx 1060 there are no problems
otherwise upgrade for gpu rtx 3000/4000

for more bandwidth on the chipset, opt for a motherboard with x570 chipset (pcie 4.0 x4)


Given the components already in your possession, if you opt for an ATX motherboard, I advise you to take the Asus proart x570 creator.

it allows to have a 2nd M2 port managed by the cpu, by lowering the pcie 2 slot to x4 instead of x8

configuration 3:

pcie slot 1 = gpu = x8
pcie slot 2 = duo 2 = x4
M2_1 = x4
M2_2 = x4 (for a second ssd or a 2nd decklink duo 2 via m2 / pcie x4 adapter)

and a 4.0 x4 chipset bandwidth to be able to use the thunderbolt 4 ports (=pcie 3.0 x4) +/or the pcie 3 slot or the M2_3 port, etc....
