We lost 30 minutes of recording this weekend when the FTB button was enacted but the TD didn't realize. Our TD was used to other systems where once you press FTB the Program screen is blank which is a clear indicator that nothing is going to Program. We were using a hardware switcher feeding vMix for the recording so we had no one constantly watching the vMix computer. Is this something that can be implemented with a software upgrade?

I would guess no. The same request have been made many times over the years...
Only thing changed is the warning sign over Output in recent version.

I need to bring this up again. Lost another recording because the person didn't recognize the flashing FADE TO BLACK because the screen was showing so they thought the recording was fine. I'm definitely gonna be bringing this up at NAB this year.

So, don't use it.

We fade in a black overlay instead of FTB.

Go to settings and enable the warning for FTB. This then flashes a red message on the output screen when FTB is activated. There is also a warning available for low/no audio.

The reason FTB doesn't show black on output is because you won't know what you're coming back to when FTB button is pressed again.

It sounds like the better way for you is to have a black input which you put into preview and fade to and from.
