Howdy...

I have a fairly stock Obsidian system with 3 NDI-HX sources coming in (PTZ optics Cams)...

I notice that when I first launch vMix, the CPU usage is around 15%, and all is fine... but over time, this creeps up, and an hour or so later, with no changes, we're using around 60% cpu...

Anyone else seem something similar? Or am I missing something?

Smiles,

Ben

complete guess work from a non technical-

packets backing up and the amount/backlog getting bigger (I believe this happens in the ram which I don't know counts as cpu so might not be this) so through the stream you're working on more and more of a buffer (which would mean it's not computer related)

Well, I'm not actually streaming anything here... And there's no delay... If 'packets' were backing up, there'd be a delay.. But the cameras are working fine... It's just the CPU starts at 15% and then creeps up to around 60%...

Any other ideas?

Hi Ben,

Run some isolation tests to see if you can identify what causes the problem.
First check Task Manager under the Details tab to see if it is vmix64.exe that is where all the CPU usage is coming from.

If so, add inputs into vMix one by one starting with just a single camera, and leave it for a while and see what happens before adding a second and so on.

Martin

I am having the exact same issue. Using 3 PTZOptics cams which I upgraded to NDI. CPU starts off at 15% and climbs to 45% in about 15 minutes. The Task Manager indicated most of the CPU usage was from vMIx. The cameras seem to work OK (except the zoom settings don't recall from the presets anymore :( . The pan and tilt still works OK when recalling presets.

This might be a clue:
I was streaming last Thursday but was NOT using NDI inputs form the cameras. I was a little leary so I used SDI. The CPU usage was normal of course but oddly enough, after about 45 minutes, the "vMIxNDIHelper" stopped working even though I wasn't using NDI ! Luckily it didn't crash vMIx when I was streaming...

Could this be related to the Newtek NDI driver that I installed during the camera upgrades ? Maybe this is what's causing the CPU to run away when using NDI as well ?

Just some food for thought...

Edit: I tried one camera at a time and the CPU rises as well (from 5% to 15%)

With a single camera added and the CPU showing higher than normal, go to Settings -> About and click Send Support Report
and drop an email to info@vmix.com.au with your key and we will see if anything shows up in the logs.

Also double check the latest NDI HX driver is installed from the NewTek web site

Hi, Martin...

Per your request, I've done just that. Using a single NDI cam, I've let the CPU creep up, and then made a support report and sent it to you... Then I sent an email with the key to that address...

Looking forward to seeing what the issue is!

Best,

Ben

Howdy...

So, the system works great with NDI at first... then it creeps up to around 15%-20% per camera I have hooked up via NDI.

If I'm streaming and recording, all is good to begin with, but after about 10-15m the CPU hits over 100%...

When I first start vMix, it's running at around 20% with 3 or 4 NDI sources...

I hope this can be fixed shortly. I have a livestream next week I was hoping to use these NDI cams with...

Best,

Ben

Ben,
This is just a WILD shot, but can you share what resolution and frame rate you have in vMix and the cams? And change to something else.

This weekend I think I noticed that my CPU was running very high with two NDI-HX streams. vMix 1080 50p, cams at 1080 50i (I think, I'm not in the studio now). But today, having the cams changed to 1080 50p I think the CPU usage was much lower. Have not digged into this, but your question reminded me of my own observations.

Howdy... I'm running at 1080p30. vMix is at 1080p30....

You said you were running high, but our issue is the CPU starting low and then creeping up...

I'll try changing to something else next time I'm in the studio, however...

Best,

Ben

Side note, I too got a message today when starting vMix that vMIxNDIHelper had stopped. Happened after installing NDI-HX driver. Not immediately after and can't recall how long after or what I had done in between.

Hi guys,

As an update we have been able to replicate the increasing CPU using Studio Monitor and a PTZ Optics camera with the NDI HX firmware, so it doesn't appear to be a vMix related issue.
We have submitted a report to PTZ Optics, so hopefully they will have a fix soon.

Martin

I believe PTZOptics discovered the culprit based on testing about a week ago and have new firmware for the line being worked on currently to resolve the issue as well as a few other small bugs.

In the meantime please follow the steps below to manually fix the problem.

The issue lies in a setting within the "Video" Settings section of the WebGUI

First select your "NDI Mode" - High (SDI-G2-POE Models) or Medium (All other models)

For the "First Stream" change the i Key Frame Interval from "2" to "120" (SDI-G2-POE Models) or "60" (All other models)

For the "Second Stream" change the i Key Frame interval from "2" to "60"

Click "Apply"

OPTIONAL - To disable the multicast that has automatically been turned on by selecting an NDI Mode, a feature we are removing in the coming firmware, please navigate to the "Network" section and simply turn off "multicast," unless you truly do want this enabled.

OPTIONAL - Click "Apply"

Simply reboot the camera from the "System" section and you should see the issue resolved.

Hi, Matthew...

I tried the exact settings that you have listed here, and I'm still getting the same issue... I also tried the POE unit settings (although mine are upgraded 12X-SDIs, not the POE models... But they are running via POE).. Same problem..

I also tried on NDI-LOW settings... Same problem... Also this seems to put the cams into 720p mode...

What's strange is that it seems to work for aroudn 2-3m with no trouble... Then the CPU shoots up to 80-90%, and the video get VERY laggy.. with maybe 2-4 seconds of latency and some tearing and compression artifacts...

Then, a minute or so later, it goes back to normal and catches up. CPU drops to 30% or so again...

At around 10m, it goes WAY up to 80-90%CPU and stays there... This is with no streaming happening...

I wish this solution would have worked, but nothing I seem to do or try is making a difference...

Best,

Ben

Same problem here. One NDI-HX stream with PTZOptics 20X-SDI-G2. I have been using this setup for over a year with no troubles except my recordings were always out of sync. Easy to fix but I though the NDI-HX upgrade would fix it. The audio does now record in sync on VMix but this morning, the audio cut out an hour and a half into the church service with the VMixNDIHelper crash error.

I hope PTZOptics, Newtek, and VMix can get together and fix this soon.

Howdy...

I'm not quite sure how this is the same problem as mine was high cpu and yours seems audio related..

The latest Newtek NDIHX driver seems to have fixed this for me, however.

Also, I'm not sure how you've been using this for a year when it was just released last month.

Best,

Ben

I tried what matthewidavis suggested, but whenever I change NDI mode from Off to High I just get black. Or rather, it seems that NDI studio monitor gets nothing appropriate (there is no resolition/frame rate reported in it's window). Also black in vMix. In order to get the NDI HX video feed back I have to change back to off, and power the camera off and then on again. Rebooting via the WebGUI is not sufficient...

I would like to make a note on that I am in PAL land, so I want my cameras to use 50 Hz and 50p to match my production settings (in vMix).

So far I have not yet again noted the CPU creeping up that ben1000 has. Altough I still suspect that it MIGHT be related to vMix's resolution and frame rate. I will try with 1080 p30, and report back in case I notice any CPU creeping. (Guess that's not so important as PTZOptics have discovered the culprit).

Howdy...

Just FYI: Matthew's suggestions did nothing to help me, but the latest Newtek Driver did fix the issue...

Last week I was able to run 3 NDI cameras whilst recording and streaming and the processor never got above 50%... :)

Best,

Ben

Thanks Ben,
My question for all of the NewTek stuff, how do you know which version you have installed?

AFAIK you don't (and some of us have been nagging on NewTek about that)
