Hello,

I found it on my desk this morning. Unfortunately I have a busy day so may not get to fire it up until tomorrow.

Thanks Birddog.

Hey Speegs, that is awesome news!

Please be sure to head to the bird-dog.tv/firmware-updates page and update to the latest v1.0a firmware, it was updated yesterday. As mentioned to our pre-order holders via email, things are changing quickly on the firmware - we wanted to send you out BirdDog as soon as was practical but we will be posting updated firmware extremely regularly as we add features over the coming days/weeks.

Dan

I had a meeting cancel today, so far:

Firmware update went well, was easy and the firmware is about 20mb (surprising small)

My POE Switch Says it uses 7.02W of power.

I'm using via HDMI and Vmix detects it from two machines.

Very simple to get started.

Latency is really low.

Test Camera a Canon XA25.

Video is "chugging" a bit with fast motion. I'll do some more debugging shortly, like another switch.

I'm just filming a TV in my office with the Birddog on my test rack, plugged into my test switch, which is uplinked to another switch. I'll post more info when I can. That is not the power supply for the birddog in the picture. It running off POE. That's the Power for the XA25 :)

The sluggishness of the video doesn't seem to occur when I'm using Newtek's NDI Monitor. (I might reboot my computer, looks to be isolated to Vmix).

Sample with Newteks Tool:

https://www.dropbox.com/...%2014%2034%20am.mov?dl=0

Top is the source. Bottom is a Canon XA25 --> HDMI Into Birddog --> Newtek NDI Monitor --> LG Computer Screen. The refresh rate of the screen shows, but it's fine if not filming a TV :)

Recorded on my iPhone 6, as you can see the latency is very good, picture quality is also very good.

Great news Speegs!

Can I check with you what video format you are sending to the BirdDog? The stepping could possibly be something to do with the auto-detect frame-rate on HDMI, we have done a lot of work on this but it may be misreading your exact format. If this happens, NDI monitor will look fine, but any 'switcher' will not interpret the frame rate correctly.

You could always try manual video format settings in the web interface to troubleshoot it with vMix.

Thanks

Dan

As you can see I use my Vmix Mousepad every day:

https://www.dropbox.com/...%2042%2024%20am.mov?dl=0

Left Screen is Newtek NDI Monitor, Right Screen is Vmix Full Screen.

Same Computer Same Network Path.

The right screen, Vmix has Microsleeps (pauses) particularly towards the end of the Video. My testing has discovered VMix doesn't seem to render NDI as smoothly as the NewTek NDI Monitor at least on my computer. I thought it was a Birddog issue, but doesn't appear to be.

I'm not sure about recording, just tested displaying to the screen. Maybe Martin has an explanation.

Using Vmix 64 bit, version 19.0.0.54

Test system:

Core i7 6700K, Quad core 4Ghz
GTX 1060 GPU.

So far testing the Birddog (in my office or lab if you want to get fancy I've been impressed).

Thanks Dan.

Canon Camera said it outputs at 1080p on the HDMI, but it doesn't I think because that option isn't even available on SDI via the XA25.

Setting Camera (manually), Birddog (manually) and Vmix to 1080i50 that chugging/pausing did go away. I'd hunt around for something to test 1080p60 later. Maybe a GoPro does that :)

SDI Works well (same as HDMI), don't try and "live" switch from HDMI or SDI. It will crash the NDIHelper and Vmix. So stop the camera, then import it back in again.

I have not tested any audio yet, it's not a priority for me as I take audio from a mixer anyway direct into Vmix.

I will have to test what happens when doing silly things like disconnecting the network cable and stuff like that happens because that does happen in the field :) Wouldn't want rebooting the Birddog to cause Vmix a problem.

Speegs, can you confirm you are running on firmware v1.0a from the website?

http://www.bird-dog.tv/firmware-updates

This should address the NDIHelper issue. Let me know if it doesn't and we will put it back on the list!

Yes I upgraded the firmware first thing, I didn't even check the firmware that was shipped.

Ran my unit for over 16 hours non-stop seems ok, warm but not hot to touch. Sorry I don't have a temperature gauge, I should buy one of those point and shoot ones.

A not perfect test, this is "average joe" testing. Not what I consider scientific. No sound in this, most of the audio features will be coming in future versions of firmware.

I downloaded this file:

http://jell.yfish.us/med...ish-110-mbps-hd-h264.mkv

Played it on an i3 laptop at 1080 in Windows Media Player

Captured it on a Birddog into Vmix via a "normal" Gigabit network with typical office traffic (not isolated at all). Then recorded at MP4, 50M in Vmix.

https://www.dropbox.com/...2012-21-17%20PM.mp4?dl=1

For anyone interested in an NDI workflow and what you would expect to see as an end result on "typical" settings using a very early birddog firmware. (If reading this in a few months, much could have been improved).

This is a public service I'm not a marketing guy, just a user. I'm not a scientist or lab guru. Just a bloke trying out his new toy in a scenario that really exceeds what I'll be doing in production use soon enough. I'm sure there are better testing procedures and I could easily have a setting wrong.

There might be so many thinking do I buy a capture card or a new NDI thing (that is way more flexible, at a small sacrifice in quality). I'd say have both in your kit, but this might help you make more confident choices.

I don't work for Birddog, Newtek or Vmix. I'm not a re-seller. I don't care what you buy :) If you want to buy a race horse look me up.

Anything specific you want me to test out? I'm planning a side by side test with the Newtek Spark when I get one

Ran a test with a GoPro Hero 4 and 3+, because I've had trouble with those before. It's Birddog friendly.

Sorry didn't have anything worth while to point it at and it's totally out of focus the screen is about 2 inches away from the camera. I was more testing it was sending a signal properly.
