In Wirecast I know it is possible to record your output in 2 or even more resolutions to separate files simultaneously.
I could not find anything in vMix that allows one to do that - am I wrong?
Is it possible - and how?

AFAIK, no, you cannot make two different resolution recordings within vMix.
You would need to record externally (so it is definitely possible, just not with the click of one button from a single app).

Thanks Ice - I guess I'll have to encode the HD file separately for the client after the event using Adobe Encoder.

Hi Pesi

you can activate external out to feed an external recorder like VLC, OBS or another instance of FFMPEG. Just make sure your PC is powerful enough (by doing prior tests).

Thanks Guillame - but I don't possess a separate external recorder.
I just wish vMix had the same capability to record a second (even third) version of the same recorded file in different resolutions (same codec though - e.g. all H264) just like Wirecast can.
I much prefer the power and flexibility of vMix but a few of the same features as Wirecast would be very welcome.
Maybe I should make a feature request?

VLC, OBS and FFMPEG are free softwares... External here means outside of vMix, not external hardware recorder.

Thanks for the VLC work around as I was wondering the same thing.

Since no one else mentioned it don't forget the you could NDI to another computer for encoding & or Streaming.
It seems like it is becoming more common to use multiple PC's with vMix because of NDI.

Does anyone have a real world usage on an i7 with vMix and VLC, can you run 2 instances of VLC and do a realtime encode to 3 formats?

You're right Rich, NDI is another option

- However NDI recording format is not easy to work with. SHQ2 codec is not widely used and most NLEs or even video players can't use it
- SHQ2 produces very high quality recordings at very high bitrates. This is a professional codec for production, not for easy distribution

- Yes we can use NDI to transport video to other computers, but apart from Newtek tools, vMix and very few other solutions, it is nearly impossible to use these NDI streams. For example FFMPEG, VLC, OBS, Premiere, Resolve just can't play them. So they can't record them either.

One possible, but not free, solution is to use NDI Transmit from Newtek to receive the stream and pass it to any recorder as if it is a local capture card (virtual device).

Regarding using VLC as a recorder, it is great for sure but requires a little bit more knowledge from the user for good settings. Maybe OBS Studio is an easier solution and it also uses FFMPEG/NVENC (hardware encoder) so you can have the exact same quality than with vMix.
