We have just finished upgrading our presentation space with a new computer for vMix, HD Cameras, HD Document camera, and large format television displays. I am having trouble getting a computer source to automatically work on a SDI input in the vMix computer. The computer is connected with HDMI to a 3G HDMI to SDI adapter (which is supposed to be 1080p capable) and from there to a SDI input on a Blackmagic DeckLink card. The only way I can get this to work is by setting the computers graphics output to 1920x1080@59i Hz. If I set the computer to a progressive refresh rate it does not show up in vMix. Our installer says that this is a limitation of HDMI's anti piracy "feature". Is there anything else I could do it make this work seamlessly. My boss is not accepting the answer that every computer that gets connected will have to be manually configured.

If your installer is saying it's HDCP I think that's unlikely, systems either 'see' HDCP encryption or they don't, it's not resolution dependent.

What happens if you feed a DVD player or a camera down the HDMI converter?

I have connected a Denon Blu Ray Player and and Elmo Document camera to the HDMI to SDI converter and both work.

Not all of the Blackmagic devices are plug and play. With some of them you have to set the incoming resolution and framerate manually with the Blackmagic software. Then use the same settings for the input in vMix.

Something else that might be an option.

I set up a projector for my brother and the projector was a bit fussy locking up to the HDMI input.

Due to him wanting some other equipment I had to run the input through a cheap Chinese HDMI splitter and hey presto instant lock up every time.

An engineer friend of mine was explaining that there are 3 types of HDMI signal and that by putting a feed through one of these cheap splitters it can 'clean up' or convert the HDMI signal so it's more acceptable to whatever you're feeding it to.

What HDMI to SDI adapter are you using? Make and model?

ovinas,

I checked on the Blackmagic device software and the only configuration option I have is choosing between the SDI and HDMI inputs. As I mentioned before, the installer is using the SDI port and a HDMI to SDI adapter. Out of curiosity I connected my sources directly to the HDMI port on the blackmagic decklink mini recorder, bypassing the adapter, and changed the input in BlackMagic and vMix to HDMI.
The result was that any source I connected that attempted to connect at a progressive rate instead of interlaced would not work in vMix.
Is there a setting I am missing in vMix for progressive input sources or a limitation of vMix I am not aware of?

You did exactly what I was going to suggest - Check the source directly into the HDMI input and bypass the SDI entirely. Good Call on that.

Are you getting any vMix error at all when you add the input?

If I change the input frame rate from NTSC 29.97p to NTSC 60p vMix gives me an error that the mode is not compatible. Other than that there are no errors.

Hmmm...On the computer, what resolution are you setting it for exactly? 1920 x 1080? 1920 x 1200?

What model is the Decklink card? Some older models will just do up to 30 frames progressive in 1080

I am using 1920x1080

The card is a Decklink mini recorder (not the 4k edition)
https://www.blackmagicdesign.com/products/decklink/techspecs/W-DLK-06#W-DLK-06

I just double checked the specs and that seems to be the problem. Here are the compatible modes:
720p50, 720p59.94, 720p60, 1080p23.98, 1080p24, 1080p25, 1080p29.97, 1080p30, 1080PsF23.98, 1080PsF24, 1080PsF25, 1080PsF29.97, 1080PsF30, 1080i50, 1080i59.94, 1080i60

I could have sworn I had seen 1080p60 on that list before.

Nope, this model never had support for 50p or 60p.

Yep, that is it. I should have thought to check that but didn't.

I am kind of disappointed that the installer didn't catch it. Not only that but then tried to shift the blame to HDCP. While HDCP is a big hassle, that was clearly not the issue here. It could be that they just didn't understand the problem and not something more nefarious. It always pays to research stuff like this on your own though.

What are you going to do, replace the card with one that does 1080p60?

I need to contact the installer and see what they can do. Worst case scenario we buy the 4k decklink mini recorder card ourselves @ $195.
Best case, since the system is new they should be able to switch it out for us and charge us the difference.

Changing it out seems to be the only solution that will give us a true plug and play system.

My installer came through with a 4k BlackMagic decklink recorder card but there still seems to be a problem with vMix getting signal from the HDMI input. I can view the 1080 60p signal in the blackmagic software but not in vMix (via direct HDMI input). The HDMI to SDI adapter we were using can only go to 1080p 30hz, which does work in vMix but doesn't meet our requirements. I have verified the input, resolution, and refresh rate settings in vMix. I am using the HD version of vMix. Is it possible I have to upgrade to the 4k version of vMix to support the 4k card, even though I am not using 4k resolutions?

I'm having a similar problem....I have a computer with HDMI output going into the HDMI input on the Decklink Recorder 4K. I can see the input in the Black Magic software, but it doesn't work with Vmix. The crazy thing is that it was working earlier this week, but just recently stopped working after a reboot. I'm starting to wonder if windows updated itself and caused something to break?

I'm also unable to get Vmix to work with the Decklink Monitor 4k outputs as well. They were working earlier this week and then suddenly stopped at the same time.

My next troubleshooting step is to roll back to v19 of Vmix to see if that gets things working again.
