For a new vMix computer in a NDI studio with a five year useful life should we make sure that it has a 10G ethernet connection or is 1000mbs enough for the next five years? Seems like regular old 1000mbs can handle most everything.....but, i dont really understand the issues and appreciate the help and advice

Thank you

Rob

If NDI over your LAN is carrying 1080p/30fps video then it's taking about 100-120Mbps of your 1,000Mbps on your Gigabit network. Seven cameras would be 700-840Mbps of 1,000Mbps. (Most Gigabit networks don't actually get 1,000Mpbs)

So, RobLambert, do you plan on more than seven cameras? Just joking, of course, because we will be finding more and more uses for NDI as it and we mature. It may be sharing video between PC's to decentralize your production with a Production PC and a Streaming/Recording PC like I use weekly.

The sky is the limit. Well, actually, the network is the limit. Lol.

Tom

I am doing all this work so when you supervise the building of my workhourse computer(s) I can understand what you are doing and fix the blasted thing from the middle of the belizean rainforest when it breaks. So Tom, we need a motherboard with a 10g ethernet connection. Which one will we use? Note the Aorus Gaming 7 which your namesake Martin used for his i9-7900x build does.not have the 10g ethernet connection.

I'll be looking into the new X299 motherboards soon. 10G Ethernet will be on my list.

ASRock has a X299 (and a X99) with 10G Ethernet

As for 5 years of future life in the system, it depends on what level you will be content with. Things are moving so fast in video, hard to say where will we be in 2022. How many people were using composite capture devices five years ago and streamed in SD?

FYI, NDI does support multiple NICs. You could get a dual 1GB Ethernet based system, connect both ports to the switch and basically have 2GB of bandwidth for NDI channels for any applications running on that system.

Tom,

Will 802.11ag wifi also be on that future proofing list? I dont think that is on the ASRock Fatal1ty motherboard mentioned above

The only other motherboard with 10g i have found so far is the Asus ROG Rampage VI Extreme and it does have 802.11ag. Maybe that is the only show in town?????

For 650 USD it is some mighty fancy motherboard!

Alternatively buy a pcie card when you need it and don't restrict your current MB options. 10G cable length may be something to consider.
