Can vMix load pre-made Overlay PNG files from a folder that then can be selected with a shortcut or button?

My broadcasts use 20 to 25 different PNG Overlays per worship service. They are alpha-numerically sequenced and shared in a Dropbox folder. (They are created remotely prior to broadcast). They are sized correctly and have alpha channel.

This is for a Church service stream. I use overlays to display Hymn text and spoken responses on top of my "Output" to the stream.

I currently use VidBlaster Overly Module for this and am working towards changing to vMix if I can figure out how to do this.

My "producers" use keyboard shortcuts and mouse scroll wheel to "roll" through theses sequenced overlays without having to type in text at all.

Example video: A hymn may have 5 or 6 images (one for each stanza with an into image)

Vimeo Example Video

This video shows congregation singing and hymn text at same time.

This is a perfected process and my viewers (and producers) are used to this format.

I have been doing it this way since 2010.
This is SUPER important that I duplicate this if I switch to vMix. ( along with Playlist and external outputs )

Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi and welcome to the vMix community

what you're asking for already exists for a long time in vMix: it is the "Photos" input, which loads all image files from a folder in order to use them like a slide show.

Obviously there are control for navigating in this image list, and you can create your own shortcuts on the vMix computer or even control it from remote computers or with an external device like a Midi controller.

Here's the doc about this:
http://www.vmix.com/help19/Photos.html

Alternatively you can also play your PNG files on another computer and use NDI capture to use them in vMix.

Hope this helps

Hello Allan!

Nice to see you here :)

Guillaume is right, The Photos Input is one way to do it.

Other churches use external tools (third party apps) specifically developed for hymn texts and similar, and then Overlay their output on to their vMix production. Can't remember which tools, but you may search the Forum to find some.

A fairly recent addition to vMix called Data sources might be even more perfect for you in the future ;)
That would allow you to create data files (simplest way .txt) and then use vMix's Title Input to key them into your production. Main advantage would be that you don't have to pre-render png files (and can dynamically change the content of the .txt files, still using Dropbox). Data sources can also be controlled via shortcuts as Guillaume described.

Only thing I think you cannot do in vMix is to control via mouse scrolling. (Not sure how you do that in VidBlaster either, haven't used for a few years).

Good luck with your decision/productions,

/richard

Thank you! Do you think I could use a Multiview and overlay said "Photos" onto say a camera input and then just cycle through them?

If that is possible I might just have to go for the 60 day trial to test it.

Allan,

Welcome, I knew you would get here eventually.:)

We use third party software for the hymns.
They are brought into vMix via NDI as a transparency.
With multi-view overlaying the camera view. Much as you are doing.
We use data source for the lower thirds info.

All quite easy with vMix.

What third party software do you use? Don't answer if against forum rules. Not quite sure I understand "brought into vMix via NDI as a transparency". Can you explain or demo it?

FYI. I spent many many many hours perfecting how we currently do it and don't have a lot of time for re-engineering my process. I would like to keep it KISS. :P

ProPresenter is an option

NDI stands for Network Device Interface. It's a high quality streaming protocol for IP networks, which supports alpha transprency.
vMix uses NDI both for capturing and for delivering streams. It means you can have a computer on your LAN with ProPresenter generating your PNGs presentation that vMix will ingest so that you can overlay it on your production.

Thanks Guillaume!

I think I understand. We do use MediaShout already but "it" doesn't use alpha channel graphics (yet). I will work on that.

NDI is very interesting and I can't wait to try it!

The more I read and the more tutorials I watch, the more convinced I am that upgrade is the way to go.

Thanks everyone! I will have more questions later for sure!
