As vmix continues to develop some fanastic features, we're finding ourselves using vmix output into other vision mixers within our workflow such as an ATEM.

What would be amazing, if the vmix external output could also support a key/fill so we can support transparent elements and effectively treat vmix as a graphics overlay,

Thanks,

James

Hi James

Why don't you simply do the opposite and feed vMix with your ATEM. I have worked this way for a long time, it's much better and not only for graphics.

+1 for key&fill

I totally agree with you. This way has many advantages, but there is one problem:

LATENCY

For real live productions with screens next to the stage you can see the offset between the speakers lips and the sound you hear. Also if you use an ATEM Switcher with 20 cameras vMix gets to the end of its capabilities. So sometimes Key&Fill would be a great solution.

It's not just ATEM, we use all sorts of vision mixers. The workflow is setup with all sorts of audio embedding, other graphics systems and many other elements, so we'd potentially have multiple vmix systems feeding a vision mix. With key/fill we would have full flexibility to add multiple systems to any production system

This would make vMix a great playout engine for Atem users which is
very restricted compared to vMix, emulating an EVS.

By summing the overlay key signals this would effectively add more keyers to a downstream mixer with independent control.

Even using an EVS for key and fill replays ties up half its channels and that is resource expensive.

+1 for Key & Fill, so as I can used vMix as a stand alone live graphics source for big or small professional video switcher. Low cost alternative to Ross XPression

As a work around you could have a second box with NewTek connect pro and a Blackmagic DUO.

vMix can send RGBa output via NDI.

Then have the connect pro box connected to the ATEM key and fill.

Just an idea.

"Key & Fill" will enhance the possibilities for vMix use in professional productions. As pointed out here before in live productions with giant screens you will have problems with audio delay because of latency caused by the complete signal chain (up to 6 frames). The only (expensive) solution is in-ear gear. With hardware mixers (like ATEM or others) you will be in sync with audio plus take advantage of vMix power for all other tasks except live mixing of video signals.

Support of JL-Cooper was already an important step for acceptance as a serious instant-replay alternative. Features like these will make vMix more professional than it already is.

Karsten
