That "Streaming Idiots" guy, Tom Sinclair (aka sinc747), recently did a test demonstration of Dynamic Overlays in vMix with Martin Kay (aka zenvideo):

Is there a special set-up for this?
Images do not 'automatically' or "dynamically" change for me.
Although it was a neat presentation, there was no mention of how to set it up or what conventions need to be applied.

Am I missing something here?

oh, it is pretty easy.
vMix autoupdates the Input for image files (here .png) whenever the image file change.
So, if you use an image that is in any of your dropbox folders, and someone else (here Martin Kay) replaces that file (via a shared dropbox folder) vMix uses the updated image. As for example 32m20s into the show.
Have fun!

@ richardgatarski

I certainly understand the premise, what I am saying is that it doesn't seem to work for me.
Is this a "new" feature (I'm not running the latest release yet, but I see no notations in the changelog) or have a 'tic box' to check somewhere for "auto update"?
I have tried multiple different things and inputs to no avail...

As Tom describes in the video, the possibilities this creates for "live" updates is astounding without the need for special scripting or API calls.
I'm just trying to figure out why it doesn't work for me.

@ IceStream

I am not bright enough to have done anything tricky to make this happen! But some of my vMix clients have reported trouble duplicating my results. I have tried this on multiple PCs with no problem. All of my PCs are W7's. I use v14 and v15 with no problems. I've reviewed my settings both General Settings and Input Settings and there are no special tic boxes to check that I can find. It works when I make changes myself and re-save a PNG and when a friend makes a change and uploads it to my dropbox.

I'm stumped.

Thanks Tom, although this is not the first time I've dealt with this issue, it's good to know that I'm not the only one.
Hopefully we can get to the bottom of it this time.

Apparently, vMix is supposed to have done "auto update" since version 10, but somehow for some of us it's intermittent:

http://forums.vmix.com.a....aspx?g=posts&t=2183

I thought that Martin had set me straight on this a few years ago, but I can't seem to find the thread that dealt with it.
Like Richard, I tend to use the "Photos" folder which does have the option to 'refesh' the folder which works great.
The issue here is that if I change and save an image it does not "dynamically" update for me in vMix as it appears to do for others, and there has to be a reason why...

Hi Ice,

Can you let me know step by step how you are changing the file?
Software used etc?

Thanks,

Martin

Following this thread with interest as I have several potential clients awaiting a solution.

@ admin

Things I have tried Martin include:
- removing the file from the holding folder and adding a completely different file with the same name (i.e. Image 1)
- opening the file in Adobe Fireworks, making changes and saving it (same filename, same location)
(I have also used 'DropBox' as the holding folder as Tom and Martin did in their Demo, in addition to a local folder on my computer)

vMix never "auto-updates", the 'original' image remains unchanged as long as that "Input" is 'Open' and available in vMix.
If I add the 'Image' again as another input, the new image loads and I have both new and old available as inputs.
If I Close out and re-launch vMix ('Last Preset'), the 'Image' updates and I now have two identical image inputs.
Similarly, if I use the "Photos" input, the image does not "auto-update" but at least I have the option to 'Refresh Photos' which works fine.

Hi,

First of all make sure the latest version of vMix is installed.
Not sure why .58 is installed as that version is an old beta.

Second, what sort of folder is the image being saved to?
I also have a Windows 7 SP1 test machine here and I have run the following tests:

1. Created a folder on the desktop called "updatetest"
2. Placed an image in this folder called "image1.png" and added this to vMix as an image input.
3. Test1: Saved over this image using an image editing program - Works OK
4. Test2: Deleted file then copied file with same name into the folder - Works OK

Couple of things to note:

* Disable any 3rd party virus scanners on the system as some may interfere with the image update mechanism
Microsoft Security Essentials should be ok

* Make sure the folder is local on the system. If the image is loaded from a remote network share then
Windows has no way of keeping track of updates to the file.

* Make sure the original file is either modified or replaced. Renaming filenames within the folder
will likely not work.

Regards,

Martin

I've just updated vMix to 15.0.0.86 with a more robust image watching mechanism.
Try it out and see if it helps.
