Hard to find people who know how use a camera. Had to tell them a few times to move the camera. Would liked more zoom but went well. Alot of feedback and youtube live chat was going ballistic with amount comments.

Haha, I know right? Basketball isn't even that hard to shoot. I do some football and most of the time I'd just rather shoot myself and try to manage the production when the ball is out of play. Not perfect, but it works for a sport that is a bit slower paced like that.

@ corporatejames

Sometimes it's not just the inexperience of the staff to blame, but also the tools you use...
I'm not sure what camera/tripod/head you use, but I suspect, like most of us, it's not high end broadcast stuff so it must be remembered that it can be a challenge even for the best operators to adapt to consumer and pro-sumer grade equipment. There's nothing harder than trying to follow a sporting event on a 2.5 or 3 inch monitor with a camera that has a small zoom button placed on top of a cheap tripod and head, not that that is what you use, but the point is, the easier it is for the operator to focus on the job at hand, the more likely you are to get the results we all desire.
I see that your play-by-play guys are just in front and below your camera operator, but can the operator hear them effectively? I have always found that if the camera operator can hear the program audio (with head phones), they are more likely to capture the visuals that go along with it. I also try to have them get as close to the camera monitor as is comfortable so they can see everything on screen clearly and are less likely to shift their gaze to the "real world" and lose focus on what the camera sees. It might seem awkward or un-professional, but I will often reverse the pan/tilt handle of the video head to the front of the camera to achieve this, forcing the operator to be a foot away and not the traditional 2.5 to 3 feet away from the screen, you just have to make sure their hand is out of view when wide open.

They were using my Sony Z1P with Blackmagic SDI converter. Has Wide Angel lens but prefer not use much. Yeah like most of us budget very small or zero and I pretty much buy something new after each game or season to improve it. Getting there. Any spare dollars I have I have put towards it but as you know video work not cheap. Ideally cameras are on my biggest wish list but out of reach for me unless someone see the total potential of what we are doing and puts a big investment in to it. I still need to get audio equipment for the camera guy. Maybe wireless headphones may do the job when close by? Unfortunately every venue different and have to work out when I arrive onsite

" I still need to get audio equipment for the camera guy. Maybe wireless "

We had this thread before on this forum so I won't go on to much.. But

Try an app like zello... Feed the audio of the play by play guys back into a spare laptop, phone etc running zello and have your camera guys listen to the ( multicast ) output..

I use it extensively to build multi channel talk groups in and around a production.

Zello is something like walkie Talkie but it would be great if the talker/producer don't need to click to talk like on walkie talkie which some of them has option to transmit when talking starts

I tried ZELLO but it is really too expensive .....
it would be better to find some cheaper alternative, right?

Its not my intent to hijack the original theme of the post, just do a forum search as this has been discussed before...

But just quickly....

?????? zello is a free download.....

Zello has a vox feature, so it does send when you speak..

All good guys. Thats what great about Vmix community as we all help each other and most of us are on a tight budget so any suggestions always welcomed. But I have on my list to run wireless 2way receiver /transmitter from my umc404hd that I can talk to them and they hear the main broadcast. Just a little of reach until next season I think. Quite a few things on wish list. Most my time lately spent on programming graphics and database to improve onscreen production.

Thanks guys. The stream went very well back to USA and has had a quite few media organisations take video and do highlights from it.
